  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats These hearty oats bring a nutty flavor and chewy texture.
  • 1.5 cups milk (any kind) Can use dairy or plant-based options.
  • 1/2 cup applesauce Naturally sweet and smooth.
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey Provides depth of sweetness.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon Warm, aromatic spice.
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Enhances sweetness.
  • 1/4 tsp salt Amplifies all flavors.
  • 1 large egg Binds ingredients together.
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and chopped Contributes bursts of sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional) Adds delightful crunch.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or an 8x8-inch square pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, applesauce, maple syrup (or honey), vanilla extract, and egg.
  3. Stir in the rolled oats, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Gently fold the chopped apples into the oatmeal mixture.
  5. Pour the oatmeal mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the oatmeal is set.
  2. If adding walnuts or pecans, sprinkle them on top of the oatmeal in the last 10 minutes of baking.
  3. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

You can drizzle a little extra maple syrup on top if you like it sweeter. For a lighter version, substitute half of the oats with grated zucchini or carrots.
