- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the vanilla and almond extract (if using), along with salt, and blend to combine.
- Gradually add all-purpose flour, mixing in 1/4 cup at a time until the dough comes together.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out flower shapes.
- Transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them out.
Baking
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden. Let them cool on a wire rack.
Making Royal Icing
- Whisk together the egg white (or meringue powder) and lemon juice until frothy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until smooth with stiff peaks.
- Divide icing into bowls, adding gel colors to create vibrant decorations.
- Fill piping bags with colored icing and decorate the cookies.
- Allow cookies to dry for at least 2-3 hours before serving or storing.
Notes
Ensure butter is softened for optimal mixing. Use flour liberally when rolling out the dough. Achieve the right royal icing consistency for best results.
