Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 2 bagels 2 bagels (your choice of flavor, but everything or plain pairs well)
  • 1 medium 1 medium pear, thinly sliced (look for a ripe, juicy variety)
  • 1 medium 1 medium apple, thinly sliced (a tart apple like Granny Smith works great)
  • 1 cup 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (the sharpness adds a lovely zing)
  • 1 medium 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (sweet onions will caramelize beautifully)
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons butter (a must for that rich flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon olive oil (to balance the richness of the butter)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (just enough to enhance flavors)
  • Optional: Honey for drizzling (a sweet contrast)

Method

Caramelizing the Onions
  1. In a skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion, season with salt and pepper, and cook slowly until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Stir occasionally to avoid burning, then remove from heat once caramelized to your liking.
Prepare the Bagels
  1. Slice the bagels in half. Optionally, lightly toast them for extra crunch.
Layering the Ingredients
  1. On the bottom half of each toasted bagel, layer the caramelized onions, sliced pears, sliced apples, and shredded sharp cheddar.
  2. Top with the other half of the bagel.
Grilling the Sandwiches
  1. Wipe the skillet clean and return it to medium heat.
  2. Add a little butter and place the assembled sandwiches in the pan.
  3. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down with a spatula for even cooking until golden brown and cheese is melted.
Final Touch
  1. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, drizzle with honey if desired, then slice in half for easy eating.

Notes

Slowly caramelizing onions develops their natural sweetness. Consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the apples or a handful of arugula for added flavor. Use a heavy pan to weigh down the sandwich for better cheese melting and crust formation.
