Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your donut pan thoroughly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine pumpkin puree, granulated sugar, brown sugar, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about halfway.
Baking
- Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Brulee Topping
- Mix the granulated sugar and melted butter in a small bowl.
- Generously sprinkle this mixture over the top of each donut.
- Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it forms a crisp crust.
- Allow the brulee topping to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, try toasting the spices before adding them to your mixture. Feel free to add chopped nuts or chocolate chips for extra texture and flavor. If you don't have a kitchen torch, you can broil the sugar-topped donuts briefly in the oven.
