Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined.
- Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and then roll each ball in the additional 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.
- Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.
Baking
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and tops are cracked.
- Remove the cookies and immediately press one chocolate heart candy into the center of each warm cookie.
- Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
Chill the dough for about 30 minutes before rolling for easier handling. Swap the heart candies for mini marshmallows for a fun twist. Dust cooled cookies with powdered sugar for enhanced appearance and sweetness.
