Ingredients

Cookie Base
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar for the dough
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For Rolling
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for rolling the cookie dough balls
  • 24 pieces chocolate heart candies such as Hershey’s Kisses

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and then roll each ball in the additional 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.
  7. Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.
Baking
  1. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and tops are cracked.
  2. Remove the cookies and immediately press one chocolate heart candy into the center of each warm cookie.
  3. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Chill the dough for about 30 minutes before rolling for easier handling. Swap the heart candies for mini marshmallows for a fun twist. Dust cooled cookies with powdered sugar for enhanced appearance and sweetness.
