Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually stir the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, blending until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
Making Royal Icing
  1. In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites or meringue powder until stiff peaks form.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar and lemon juice, whisking until smooth and glossy.
  3. Divide the royal icing into smaller bowls and add food coloring to create desired shades.
Decorating
  1. Once cookies are cool, use a piping bag to decorate with royal icing, adding sprinkles or edible glitter as desired.
  2. Allow the icing to set for at least an hour before serving.
